The past year has been hard on many of us who miss the one on one interaction of other people. Being shut in and separated because of the pandemic has added to loneliness and stress levels for millions of people. And this can have serious mental health repercussions. It turns out, coffee can mitigate this and the most recent research says coffee reduces suicide risk.
From The Harvard School Of Public Health:
The authors reviewed data from three large U.S. studies and found that the risk of suicide for adults who drank two to four cups of caffeinated coffee per day was about half that of those who drank decaffeinated coffee or very little or no coffee.
Caffeine not only stimulates the central nervous system but may act as a mild antidepressant by boosting production of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline. This could explain the lower risk of depression among coffee drinkers that had been found in past epidemiological studies, the researchers reported.
We often joke about people’s addiction to caffeine and how good coffee makes you feel. Hell, that’s that name of this site!! So, we’re really not surprised that coffee reduces suicide risk.
Additionally, more and more studies are showing that coffee can reduce the risk of several other ailments and diseases.
From The New York Times:
The latest assessments of the health effects of coffee and caffeine, its main active ingredient, are reassuring indeed. Their consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of all kinds of ailments, including Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, gallstones, depression, suicide, cirrhosis, liver cancer, melanoma and prostate cancer.
The tide has definitely turned on what used to be a very mixed bag of results regarding studies on coffee health. More and more studies are adding to the mountain of positive evidence that coffee reduces suicide risk and many other things. So, keep drinking coffee and enjoy life!! You’ll be living longer because of coffee!!
